Please understand that the Lampstand Learning Center is a new venture, and that this first year is most definitely a "beta" year. Our answers to the questions below may change as we gain experience. Please refresh this page whenever visiting this site!
A: Grading will vary with the class. Writing classes will give more feedback than history ones, for instance. We do not envision grading daily work ever, but we will offer a discussion grade based on class participation, and plan to offer teacher training sessions that equip you to grade the essay portions of Lampstand Press Evaluations.
A: For writing courses, the teacher will provide feedback on papers and also offer suggested grades for final drafts.
A: For core classes, teachers will basically only cover the discussion scripts for each week-plan. While we may do some debating in our history classes as outlined in discussion scripts, we won't be doing the larger group projects.
A: With the exception of our Bridge Literature classes, we will only use in-print books suggested in the curriculum. While we may not cover all the books that Tapestry assigns, we will not add any books that Tapestry plans do not assign.
A: We will use polls, debating, a white board, collaboration in class to improve written work, visual aids, short video clips, etc. Sometimes, we can also play games, such as a variant on Jeopardy. The software used in online classes allows for both variety and interaction between teachers and students, and among students.
A: Teachers may use those days to review major threads for the class, play games that reinforce what they have been learning, or give quizzes.
A: We don't envision this possibility this year.
A: We would like to record the classes if we can work out the technical challenges to protecting the recordings and assuring that they aren't available to students outside class. However, if missing classes due to scheduling conflicts (such as time zone differences) will be a consistent issue for you, we recommend that you not sign up for classes during this first beta year.
A: No, we are not a degree-granting or legal covering organization. Our purpose only extends to aiding parents in teaching their children at home.
A: No, students will not be turning in accountability and thinking questions. We do plan to offer study sessions for students so they will know how to fill these out well. We will also be offering teacher training sessions for parents on using and grading the Student Activity Pages.
A: We will suggest various grading schemes for different classes. For History students, for instance, we will recommend that you use Evaluations as needed and desired, and will be offering a teacher training seminar to help you feel more confident in grading the essay portions of these tests and quizzes. Writing classes will include teacher markups of drafts and suggested final grades for finished drafts. Also, some teachers may be able to give class participation grades that you can use to average in with grades for written work that you determine at home. These options will be further clarified as we continue to hone our offerings and as teachers begin to look at actual lesson contents.
